All the things I wished I knew: “If you loved me, you’d…”

It’s been…a very long time … since I wrote my last post. My girls are no longer little…

And I’ve realized that life for teenage girls today is definitely harder than it was when I was a teenager. But we also have so many online resources to draw from, too. So for all those teenagers out there, whether you’re now parents, or actually still in your teens, here’s a series of posts about things I wish I knew when I was a teen.

I’ll start with a referencing classic manipulation technique: “If you loved me, you’d…”

Some examples:

  • “If you loved me, you’d …loan me $20”
  • “If you loved me, you’d …have sex with me”
  • “If you loved me, you’d …forgive my cheating”
  • “If you loved me, you’d ….stay”

Here’s a short and sweet video by Real Talk about this technique, what makes it manipulative, and some possible ways to respond.

Has this technique been used on you? If so, how did you respond?
